please help backporting some patches to stable release 19.11.13

Hi Christian,

ea1ef0b937 and 8ba42ce98d don't need backporting to 19.11, and 19.11 
hasn't these codes.

The following patch don't need backporting to 19.11 due to the large 
conflicts.
And they don't introduce serious problems.
